Overpriced insurance can stress out your funds, especially in this economy. Comparing price quotes can save money and help to lower your bills every month.
Popular companies such as GEICO, Progressive and Allstate constantly blast consumers with fancy advertisements and consumers find it hard to see through the deception and do the work needed to find the best deal.
Compare insurance coverage quotes online
Performing a rate comparison is a ton of work if you aren’t aware of the best way to get rate quotes. You can waste a lot of time talking about coverages with insurance companies in your area, or you can stay home and use online quoting to quickly compare rates.
Most of the best insurance companies belong to a marketplace where prospective buyers submit their information once, and at least one company can give them a price determined by their information. This saves time by eliminating quotation requests for each company you want a rate for.
To get comparison pricing now enter your zip code here.
The single downside to getting quotes like this is you are unable to specify which insurance companies to get quotes from. So if you want to choose from a list of companies to compare, we have a page of the cheapest insurance coverage companies in your area. Click to enter zip code for insurance companies.
The approach you take is up to you, just be certain you are entering exactly the same deductibles and coverage limits for each comparison quote. If your comparisons have different coverage information you will not be able to determine which rate is truly the best. Even a minor difference in insurance coverages or limits may cause a big price difference. And when comparing insurance coverage rates, know that getting more free quotes will enable you to find the best rates. Not every company provides rate quotes online, so you also need to get prices on coverage from those companies, too.
When do I need an agent’s advice?
When buying proper insurance coverage for your personal vehicles, there really is no “best” method to buy coverage. Everyone’s needs are different and your policy should reflect that. For example, these questions can help discover whether or not you might need an agent’s assistance.
- When would I need rental car insurance?
- Can my teen drive my company car?
- What is no-fault insurance?
- Is business equipment covered while in my vehicle?
- Can I still get insurance after a DUI?
- How much liability coverage do I need in my state?
- Is my vehicle covered by my employer’s policy when using it for work?
If it’s difficult to answer those questions but you know they apply to you then you might want to talk to a licensed insurance agent. If you want to speak to an agent in your area, simply complete your zip code.
Insurance coverage considerations
Knowing the specifics of insurance helps when choosing the best coverages and proper limits and deductibles. The terms used in a policy can be confusing and reading a policy is terribly boring. Shown next are the normal coverages found on most insurance policies.
Auto liability – Liability coverage protects you from damage or injury you incur to people or other property. This coverage protects you against other people’s claims. It does not cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
Liability coverage has three limits: bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. You might see values of 25/50/25 that translate to $25,000 bodily injury coverage, a limit of $50,000 in injury protection per accident, and $25,000 of coverage for damaged property. Another option is a combined single limit or CSL that pays claims from the same limit rather than limiting it on a per person basis.
Liability insurance covers things such as repair bills for other people’s vehicles, attorney fees, funeral expenses, medical expenses and emergency aid. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is a decision to put some thought into, but you should buy as large an amount as possible.
Collision – This pays for damage to your Gladiator caused by collision with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. You will need to pay your deductible and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision coverage pays for things like backing into a parked car, colliding with another moving vehicle and sustaining damage from a pot hole. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so consider dropping it from lower value vehicles. It’s also possible to increase the deductible to save money on collision insurance.
Protection from uninsured/underinsured drivers – Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you and your vehicle when the “other guys” either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. Covered claims include medical payments for you and your occupants and also any damage incurred to your Jeep Gladiator.
Since a lot of drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. So UM/UIM coverage is a good idea. Usually the UM/UIM limits are set the same as your liability limits.
Medical expense insurance – Med pay and PIP coverage kick in for immediate expenses like hospital visits, funeral costs, doctor visits and X-ray expenses. They are used to fill the gap from your health insurance policy or if you do not have health coverage. Coverage applies to both the driver and occupants in addition to any family member struck as a pedestrian. PIP is only offered in select states but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
Comprehensive (Other than Collision) – This coverage covers damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You need to pay your deductible first then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive can pay for things like damage from a tornado or hurricane, hail damage, falling objects, a broken windshield and theft. The maximum amount your insurance company will pay is the actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
